📸 Best Family Photo Locations in Southern Maryland: A Photographer’s Local Guide
One of the most common questions I get from clients is: “Where should we take our family photos?” It’s a great question because your chosen location sets the tone for the entire session.
Do you want a golden field where your kids can run barefoot? A beach at sunset where you can snuggle with your toes in the sand? A rustic boardwalk through the trees? Luckily, living and photographing families in Southern Maryland means we’re surrounded by incredible, natural beauty, much of it just a short drive from home.
Whether you’re in Northern Calvert County, Southern Anne Arundel, or Chesapeake Beach, here are some of my favorite local spots for unforgettable family photo sessions.
🌿 How to Choose the Right Location for Your Family Photos
Before we dive into the list, here are a few things to consider when choosing your spot:
What vibe are you going for? Do you imagine playful and bright, moody and dramatic, woodsy, coastal, or classic?
How old are your kids? Some spots are better suited for toddlers (easy walking paths, safe areas to explore), while others are ideal for older kids or teens who can wander more freely.
Do you want to include pets? Some locations are more dog-friendly than others.
Time of year: Some spots look incredible in spring bloom or fall color, while others shine in summer or winter.
No matter your vision, we’ll find the right place. And the good news? All you have to do is show up and love on your people—I’ll handle the light, the angles, and the magic.

Best for: Waterfront lovers, simple and clean backdrops, low-key sessions.
4. Ward Farm Recreation Park – Dunkirk
This spot offers broad, open meadows, forest-lined edges, and simple trails. It’s a blank canvas that works in every season. Because of the space, it’s also great for extended family sessions.
Best for: Classic family portraits, running wild, and fall color.
5. Dares Beach – Prince Frederick
A low-key local beach with a nostalgic feel. This is a lovely spot if you’re after barefoot, sandy moments without the crowds of bigger beaches. I love how laid back it feels, especially at sunset.

7. North Beach Boardwalk & Pier
Classic, charming, and full of variety. You’ll get beach, pier, marsh grasses, and even a little town charm all in one place. Early morning or golden hour works best here for light and avoiding crowds.
Best for: Variety in one session, beachy vibes, toddlers who love to explore.
8. Wetlands Overlook Park – North Beach

9. Brownie’s Beach / Bayfront Park – Chesapeake Beach
A bit of a local favorite, this small beach has dramatic cliffs and beautiful water views. There’s a mix of sand, shells, and pebbles. Note: It can be busy on weekends, so weekdays are ideal. Currently, you must be a Chesapeake Beach resident to access the park.

Fall: Ward Farm and South River Farm glow with warm tones and golden hour light.
Winter: Try cozy at-home sessions or a walk along Galesville’s waterfront for moody winter light.
💬 Final Thoughts
The truth is, the “perfect” location isn’t about the most dramatic background; it’s about what feels true to your family. Some of my favorite images come from simple moments: your toddler picking up seashells, your partner kissing your cheek, your kids wrapped around your legs mid-laugh.
If you’re unsure which spot to choose, I’m here to help. I’ll guide you toward the place that fits your vibe, season, and family’s energy.
